About ‘Darr River Downs’
A Storied Past
'Darr River Downs' was originally a thriving merino sheep station covering over 700,000 acres and boasted one of Queensland's first Woolscours, where wool was processed locally before being sent to the woolstores in Brisbane. Stone weirs painstakingly constructed by the Chinese gardeners are still evident along the Darr River itself and the cemetery 'Boot Hill' entombs past employees including a manager who was murdered on site.
The nearby railway township of Morella, just 16 km away, was inhabited until 1990, and annual events for the district including the 'International Dinner' and 'Christmas Tree' are still held at the QWCA Hall.
